Bus Survey + Results

We set up a small survey about bus usage, particularly Wellington bus usage but also open to those from other places, to get a feel for how the general public feels about buses.

Link to Survey

An analysis of the results:
  • Most of our respondents used the bus often, with many saying they used it nearly every weekday. They were also all within the range of 19-25.
  • People cited early morning commutes as the most stressful time for bus journeys.
  • People tend to just zone out or use their phones while on the bus, with the only stated source of discomfort during the ride being if the bus is overcrowded.
  • A quarter of respondents can not drive while over half chose buses as alternative to cars for commutes and short trips to the city.

  • One respondent noted that they paid "With snapper because it's cheaper. If my snapper has run out I would hop off the bus and grab an uber", showing that people may like low prices but also highly prioritize convenience.

FreshPaper

"While the world’s farmers harvest enough food to feed the planet, it is estimated that up to 50% of the global food supply is wasted. Fenugreen is taking on this enormous, yet often overlooked, global challenge with a simple design, FreshPaper. Low-cost, compostable and infused only with organic spices, FreshPaper keeps produce fresh for 2-4x longer, and holds the potential to change how the world keeps its food fresh."

Flexible Space

A wall that allows anyone to be their own architect and modify their homes to suit their needs.
We are living in a time where more than half of the world’s population live in cities, and with limited space, adaptation and flexibility are the keys to comfortable urban living. Traditional homes often undergo many renovations over their lifetimes, and with each upgrade come a number of inconveniences, including noise, stress and a general overall chaos. And aside from the huge personal cost, these renovations generate millions of tons of waste every year. So why pour money and energy into rigid walls when you can purchase flexible ones and renovate your home in an instant?

The Flexible Space by IKEA provides the ultimate modularity and allows users to make the most out of any existing living space. As a movable partition with integrated furniture, the wall can instantly create a new space within a single room to meet any housing need.

1.2 Independent Study - Choosing a topic

Laya and I talked with Sam and settled on the general topic of bus travel within the city.

Public transportation is a source of stress for many. However, for people who don't own a car, a licence, or have other extraneous circumstances, there isn't a choice but to use it.

I attended a few workshops last year run focused around public transportation in Wellington and got to hear a range of opinions on the current system from people who use it on a daily basis. I personally don't use buses as often, as I live within walking distance of the CBD and university, but I have no other options if I want to go any further.

Key frustrations from other workshop attendees:

  • buses not being on time
  • having no way of knowing if a bus is late/has already past/is cancelled
  • overcrowding at bus stops and on board
  • high costs (especially if buses are required regularly)
  • confusion about routes (from people who don't use buses as often)

Reflection Diary Week 1

My reflective image of the week:

Just our whole class, spending the evening popping in and out of the google doc for this week's reading.

Occasionally chatting in the side bar.

I met up with the other folks in my Interdiscipline Exchange group this Friday and we chatted a bit about what our briefs were and how they differed. We didn't have much to discuss as we hadn't gotten very far in class yet, but we made a Facebook messenger group to keep in touch.
