1.2 Independent Study - Choosing a topic

Laya and I talked with Sam and settled on the general topic of bus travel within the city.

Public transportation is a source of stress for many. However, for people who don't own a car, a licence, or have other extraneous circumstances, there isn't a choice but to use it.

I attended a few workshops last year run focused around public transportation in Wellington and got to hear a range of opinions on the current system from people who use it on a daily basis. I personally don't use buses as often, as I live within walking distance of the CBD and university, but I have no other options if I want to go any further.

Key frustrations from other workshop attendees:

  • buses not being on time
  • having no way of knowing if a bus is late/has already past/is cancelled
  • overcrowding at bus stops and on board
  • high costs (especially if buses are required regularly)
  • confusion about routes (from people who don't use buses as often)
